Mirror is an interactive photography book that bridges the worlds of image and sound. It is a collaborative project between artist/photographer Ara Oshagan and musician Gor Mkhitarian combining music and photographs created over a ten-year period.
Beyond the representation of the moments and emotional states during a musical performance, Oshagan and Mkhitarian are interested in the representation of a creative process and the spaces that give rise to this process. Mirror is a construction of a visual narrative that creates a bridge from the visual to rhythmic by mirroring the ebb and flow of music itself. The layout and construction of the book has a distinct rhythm while the mixing of color and black/white photographs, single images, diptychs, triptychs and handwritten text, all contribute to a layered narrative.
Technologically linked to this visual narrative is Mkhitarian's music. Employing the latest augmented reality technology, a free mobile app enables the audience to interactively hear Mkhitarian’s music on their electronic device while viewing Oshagan’s photographs.
Mirror glimpses the temporary spaces out of which music is created and couples these views to the music sourced from those very spaces. The result is a new work of art: constructed from two distinct artistic media and united via the latest technology. Mirror posits a new sensibility: that technology can expand the narrative horizons of personal artistic interaction.
