Crash Flash III: Creative Uses of Flash with Julia Dean (Julia Dean Photo Workshop)

Julia Dean, 755 Seward St, Los Angeles, CA 90038

Admission: $275 + $100 model and equipment fee

Enrollment limit: 12 students

This class is meant for those who understand how to use flash but wish to become more creative in their approach. After a quick review about using multiple flashes in TTL wireless mode and in manual mode with radio slaves, Julia will discuss and demonstrate creative approaches to using small strobes, such as how to light two people in the front seat of a car as they drive down an alley at dusk. Other demonstrations include shooting from the outside-in, such as lighting people inside a storefront or picture window, or lighting somebody outside at night.

After working as a class on one creative lighting setup, participants will be put into teams of two people, in which they will work with agency-represented models in pre-determined locations. The last two hours of class will be spent painting with light, a technique used with a flashlight, a tripod, and an open-shutter. The shoot will begin in the studio and end on the streets after dark.

Prerequisite: “Crash Flash II: Multiple Flash” or knowledge of how to use multiple flashes in both TTL wireless mode and manual mode with radio slaves.
