This festival is designed to be a multi-tiered collaborative initiative. Our mission is to advance dynamic programming designed to engage and stimulate the photography community of Los Angeles. 

The MOPLA Photographers Open Call is open to both emerging and established photographers worldwide.  


LOST ROLLS AMERICA x MONTH OF PHOTOGrApHY LOS ANGELES

Submit your film to Lost Rolls America and see your lost images in the MOPLA exhibition this April in Los Angeles! It is free to participate!

Please send us 1-2 rolls of film. These must be at least 3 years old - film that you shot but never had developed. 

Lost Rolls America will develop your film and will send you a link to a private web gallery of images from your old film. You will pick 1-2 images, write your own memories about them, and they will be uploaded to become part of the Lost Rolls America archive and features in the MOPLA exhibition. 

Lost Rolls America is presented by FujiFilm, PhotoWings, and PhotoShelter.

DEADLINE: March 1, 2018 by 11:59pm PT

*In order to be in the exhibition, your film must be mailed by March 1. If you miss the deadline, your images will still be in the archive, but may not be in the LA exhibition.

FRESH LOOK: A PORTFOLIO REVIEW

The Lucie Foundation is proud to announce the ninth installment of Fresh Look: A Portfolio Review, taking place during the Tenth Anniversary Edition of Month of Photography Los Angeles. Photographers will have the opportunity to ENGAGE in critical conversation and receive constructive critique on their work, REFINE their portfolios, CONNECT with seasoned industry figures and fellow photographers, and CREATE meaningful relationships to take their work and career to the next level.

The program will take place on Friday, 4/13, and Saturday, 4/14, from 10:00am – 2:00pm at The LINE Hotel in Los Angeles. 

Each day offers nine blocks of reviews, lasting twenty minutes each. Participants are limited to one review block per reviewer.

ANALOGUE PORTRAIT PROJECT

Month of Photography Los Angeles is accepting submissions for the 5th annual Analogue Portrait Project! The MOPLA Analogue Portrait Project is a submission based competition featuring both emerging and established photographers. All portraits submitted must have been made using film, not digital cameras.

DEADLINE: February 15th, 2018 at 12am PST

Artist’s reception and APP Exhibition of the 25 Winners selected will be held on Friday, April 27th at Smashbox Studios in Culver City!

Ron Haviv, Award-Winning Photojournalist and Founder of VII Photo Agency
Kate Kuo, Photo Editor at the Los Angeles Times

Prizes Include: The Judges will select the 25 images to be featured in the exhibition, and they will select 1 Winner who will receive Studio Time at Smashbox Studios! This 1st place prize entails a 6 hour session, date and studio determined by availability, to be arranged with Smashbox directly.

Entry Fee: $15 per image


INSTAGRAM JAM 

Month of Photography Los Angeles is proud to announce the 6th annual Instagram Jam! Originally conceived by photographer Shaughn Crawford, Instagram Jam will feature the photography of both well known and obscure photographers who use Instagram to share their work.

Submit your images through the app for a chance to participate! Ten image-makers will be announced by the end of February and featured in the official Instagram Jam exhibition this coming April.

Month of Photography Los Angeles Group Show

Month of Photography Los Angeles is accepting submissions for the annual Group Show! The MOPLA Group Show is a submission based exhibition featuring both emerging and established photographers. This exhibition is organized by the Lucie Foundation and will be presented during MOPLA's 10th Anniversary Edition.

HOST SPACE EXHIBITIONS

Submit a thematic body of work for exhibition consideration in one of our "host spaces".  Eligible submissions will be framed and ready to exhibit and can belong to one photographer or a group of photographers. 

Selected Host Space Exhibitions will be Official MOPLA programming co-produced by the MOPLA team and the artist and/or curator. Host Space Exhibitions will be included in the annual catalogue in addition to the MOPLA website, calendar, weekly newsletters and social media promotion.

PHOTO BOOKS

Month of Photography Los Angeles is accepting submissions for a juried Official MOPLA Exhibition dedicated to the photo book.  Submit books that were independently or commercially published and distributed from anywhere in the world within the last 24 months. Eligible books include - self published, handmade, exhibition catalogues, book dummies, zines, and limited/special edition photo books. 

In addition to the online submission form, all books must be sent to the Lucie Foundation office (address below) and postmarked by December 5, 2017.

FAQ

Is there a limit to the number of entries per artist? 
No, you may submit as many entries as you like. 

Is there a theme for the MOPLA Group Show? 
No, it is an open theme for the 2018 MOPLA Group Show. 

How should I prepare my files? 
Please prepare your files according to the specifications below.

  • JPG only, NO TIF, GIF, PNG, PDF files will be accepted.
  • 72 DPI
  • 800 pixels on the longest side
  • RGB, Grayscale, Black and White accepted, no CMYK.
  • Naming your files: Firstname, Underscore, Lastname, Number. For Example: John_Smith_1.jpg, John_Smith_2.jpg up to the corresponding number of images you are submitting.

Can I send print materials, books or CDs?
No, MOPLA accepts online submissions only with the exception of books submitted for the Photo Book Exhibition.
 

Will my book be returned after the jurying of the MOPLA Photo Book Exhibition?
If you would like your book returned, please send it along with prepaid packaging and postage and we will return it after the jurying process. If your book is selected for inclusion in the exhibition it will be returned once the exhibition is over. 

When will the selected artists be announced? 
Selected artists will be notified in January 2018, and the list of confirmed artists and exhibitions will be published in February 2018. 

How will I know if my submission was selected? 
If your submission was selected to participate in MOPLA, you will be contacted directly through the email which you provided in the submission form.

When and where will the festival take place? 
The Tenth Anniversary Edition of MOPLA will take place during April 2018 throughout the city of Los Angeles.

By submitting your work to any of the MOPLA Open Calls you are automatically considered for curation in Proj'ekt LA, MOPLA's very own projection series! Through Pro'jekt LA photography will be projected on buildings, walls and outdoor spaces throughout Los Angeles.
